first Sunday of Lent: Temptation

In today's Gospel (Luke 4:1-13), we see Jesus beginning His 40-day journey in the desert. He is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasts and prays in preparation for His public ministry. During this time of solitude and sacrifice, the devil approaches Him with three temptations: the temptation of turning stones into bread to satisfy His hunger, the temptation of earthly power and glory in exchange for worshiping the devil, and the temptation to test God’s protection by throwing Himself from the pinnacle of the temple.
Each time, Jesus resists the devil’s deceitful offers by responding with Scripture, demonstrating His unwavering faith and trust in the Father. His victory over temptation serves as a powerful reminder for us: no matter how strong the temptations we face, we, too, can resist with God’s grace, prayer, and trust in His Word. After failing to tempt Jesus, the devil departs, leaving Jesus to continue His time of preparation and prayer.
This passage carries a deep meaning, especially as we begin the season of Lent. This past Wednesday marked Ash Wednesday, the beginning of our own 40-day journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Lent is a time when the Lord invites us to walk with Him, to give up something as an offering, and to prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter. Just as Jesus faced trials in the desert, we, too, experience struggles, temptations, and moments of weakness. But through our sacrifices, we unite our suffering with His, growing stronger in faith and love.
When we face temptation, we must remember that we are not alone. Jesus has already overcome sin and death, and He walks beside us, strengthening us in our trials. One powerful ally in our spiritual battles is Saint Michael the Archangel. Saint Michael is known for defeating satan and casting him out of heaven and into the depths of hell. His intercession is a powerful weapon against the devil.
Whenever we feel tempted, discouraged, or spiritually attacked, we can call upon Saint Michael’s protection. The following prayer is a strong defense against evil and a plea for God’s power to triumph in our lives:
"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."
As we continue our Lenten journey, let us remain steadfast in prayer, confident in God’s presence, and vigilant against temptation. May this season be a time of renewal, drawing us closer to Christ, who has already won the victory for us. Let us walk these 40 days with faith, hope, and love, knowing that Easter brings the promise of new life.
