In today's Gospel (Luke 6:27-38), Jesus tells His disciples to turn the other cheek when something is done against them. Instead of acting in retaliation, He calls them to show mercy and forgiveness. Rather than responding with anger or vengeance, Jesus invites us to act out of love and care. This teaching challenges us to rise above our natural inclinations and choose a path that leads to peace and reconciliation. In other words, don’t do unto others what you would not want done to you.
This lesson is particularly relevant in college, where relationships and interactions with others can often be challenging. Whether it’s dealing with a difficult roommate or facing betrayal from a friend, the temptation to respond in frustration or resentment is strong. However, Jesus’ words remind us of the importance of communication, patience, and, most importantly, love. By choosing to act out of love rather than anger, we not only uphold our faith but also create an environment where healing and growth can take place.
A powerful example of this radical forgiveness is found in the life of Saint Maria Goretti. According to the Denver Catholic, in 1902, she was attacked by a young man named Alessandro, who stabbed her multiple times and left her to die. When her family found her and rushed her to the hospital, Maria’s injuries were severe. Close to her time of death, the surgeon asked her if she forgave Alessandro, and with great faith, she replied, "Yes, for the love of Jesus I forgive him... and I want him to be with me in Paradise."
Maria’s forgiveness was not just words; it had a profound impact. While Alessandro was imprisoned, Maria appeared to him in a dream, offering her forgiveness once again. This moment changed his heart. When he was released from prison, he sought out Maria’s mother and begged for her forgiveness. Her response was just as powerful as Maria’s—she forgave him, saying that if her daughter could forgive, then so could she.
Saint Maria Goretti’s life is a testament to the power of forgiveness. Her bold faith in Christ not only changed the heart of her attacker but also continues to inspire people around the world today. Forgiveness is not easy—it requires strength, humility, and grace. Yet, when we choose to forgive, we allow God’s love to work through us, bringing healing to ourselves and those around us.
As we reflect on today’s Gospel, let us ask ourselves: In what areas of our lives do we need to practice forgiveness? How can we choose love over resentment? By following Jesus’ teaching and the example of Saint Maria Goretti, we can strive to be people of mercy, spreading the light of Christ through our actions.
