St. Joseph of Arimathea: A Model of Generosity and Courage

The Gospels are full of remarkable figures whose generosity and courage illuminate the path of discipleship. One of the most striking examples is St. Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy and respected member of the Sanhedrin, who risked his reputation and social standing to give Jesus a dignified burial. His story is not just about generosity but also about the boldness required to act when others remain silent.

A Man of Status and Faith

Joseph of Arimathea was no ordinary follower of Christ. As a member of the Jewish council, he had power, influence, and wealth. The Gospels describe him as a "good and just man" who was “waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God” (Mark 15:43). Yet, he had been a secret disciple of Jesus, likely fearing the consequences of publicly aligning with Him.

After Jesus' crucifixion, Joseph courageously stepped forward. He went to Pontius Pilate and boldly asked for Jesus’ body, a move that signified both his devotion and his willingness to risk everything for Christ. He then wrapped the body in fine linen and placed it in a new tomb he had prepared for himself. While others abandoned Jesus, Joseph ensured He was given a proper burial.

Generosity in Action

Generosity is at the heart of the Catholic life. It is more than just giving, it is the willingness to sacrifice something of value for the sake of another. Joseph of Arimathea not only gave his tomb but also his public reputation to honor Jesus. He teaches us that true generosity requires action, even when it comes at a cost. We may not have a tomb to offer, but we all have opportunities to give in ways that restore dignity to others: 

• Care for the forgotten – Speak to the lonely, help the homeless, or support those in need.

• Stand for truth – Like Joseph, we must be willing to defend our faith and values, even when it’s unpopular.

• Offer what we have – Whether it’s time, resources, or simply kindness, our generosity can transform lives.

  
  

Boldness in Faith

Joseph of Arimathea reminds us that following Christ sometimes means stepping out of the shadows. He could have remained silent, but instead, he acted knowing full well the consequences. His boldness was rewarded, as his tomb became the site of the greatest event in history: the Resurrection. Like Joseph, we are called to boldly live our faith. That may mean speaking up in conversations where Christian values are challenged, or it may mean serving those in need when others hesitate. 

Joseph of Arimathea’s story is an invitation to generosity and courage. He reminds us that, even in moments of fear or uncertainty, we must act with love and faith. One day, in Heaven, we will see the impact of our generosity and courage and we will be amazed.
